| How winter makes me feel |
I didn't die. I just have a serious commitment to bailing on projects. But it's New Year's Day, the starkest reminder of one's shortfalls and the vast tundra of unaccomplished goals crowding the ever-dwindling time left in life. So I thought I'd pick it back up. Even though I don't really have anything to say because winter makes me put on sweatpants and ignore phone calls and drink in the morning.
Because last year's high octane New Year's Even plans were such shit (and Jonathan Sawyer, I'm still holding a grudge), D and I decided to stay in for a quiet night.
I spent about 4 hours in the kitchen listening to Stuff Mom Never Told You podcasts (specifically "Is food the new sex?" and "Is food the new art?" which both sort of shamed me out of taking tawdry photos of each course and just enjoying the moment like a human being, but nevertheless, the menu:)
Salad of romaine hearts, green onions and pickled cucumbers with sesame dressing
Pureed winter vegetable soup
Grilled polenta with mushroom sherry gravy
Steak (for D) and bay scallops
Mitchell's Dark Roast Coffee ice cream with homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings
We ate by candlelight and were interrupted just once by a cat sidling up to the table. Also, have you heard of Songza? It's like Pandora but better. It DJ'ed our dinner.
Here's the shameful part: We fell asleep before midnight. I'm not sorry, though. To this winter homebody, there isn't much better than a fresh layer of snow on the ground, the soft glow of a giant Christmas tree, a full stomach and a warm bed.
Happy New Year, everyone.
P.S. It's a New Year's blog post, so I feel obligated to talk resolutions. My ambitiously long list of resolutions last year went largely unfulfilled. I think I'm going to try to work on it again. Our highest priority goal, however, is saving up to buy a house. This time next year, we want to have a down payment. Wish us luck!

Happy New Years! We stayed home thanks to Mark being sick but had fun all snuggled up. We did stay up for the official ball drop though. :)
